What is a pick and carry crane?

A pick and carry crane lifts a load and can drive with it on the hook, which makes it quick to set up on tight urban sites. Franna's cranes are articulated: the machine pivots in the middle to steer and to swing the load, instead of slewing its boom on a turntable (Terex AT-20 manual). Franna began in 1978, when Dave Francis built the first pick and carry crane from truck components. Terex acquired the brand in 1999 (Franna (Terex), "History of Franna").

25t and 40t Franna load charts

"25 tonne" or "40 tonne" is the maximum rated capacity, at close radius with the boom retracted. As the radius grows, capacity drops sharply. The manufacturer's load chart for that exact model and set-up decides what the crane can lift. For a quote, give the load weight and how far it must travel from where the crane can stand, and the operator checks it against their chart.

Franna ticket and hire

A Franna operator in Victoria needs a CN licence for non-slewing mobile cranes over 3 tonnes (WorkSafe Victoria). See crane licence classes. To book one with an operator, see Franna crane hire in Melbourne. Rates are in the crane hire cost guide. For slewing cranes, see slewing vs non-slewing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pick and carry crane?

A pick and carry crane is a mobile crane that can lift a load and drive with it on the hook. Franna's machines are articulated: they pivot in the middle to steer and to swing the load, rather than slewing the boom on a turntable.

What is a Franna?

Franna is the best-known Australian brand of pick and carry crane, now owned by Terex. Its first crane was built from truck components by Dave Francis in 1978.

What sizes are Franna cranes: 20t, 25t or 40t?

Franna's current Australian range lists the AT22 (22 t), MAC25 (25 t) and AT40 (40 t). The older AT-20 is rated at 20 tonnes maximum capacity, and many are still on hire fleets.

Where can I see a 25t or 40t Franna load chart?

Load charts are published by the manufacturer for each model and configuration, and the operator lifts from the chart for the crane on site. The capacity at any radius is well below the maximum. Send the load weight and distance and the operator checks it against their chart.

What ticket do you need for a Franna?

In Victoria a Franna is a non-slewing mobile crane, so the operator needs a CN high risk work licence from WorkSafe Victoria.
